Sunica

Sunica Schreiner

My journey into psychology was not planned nor directed. Instead I meandered through creative, educational, research and volunteering contexts gathering learnings along the way that informed and broadened my lens and practice of psychology. For well over a decade, I have worked with individuals, families and groups with a broad range of difficulties in a variety of mental health settings. I draw on these experiences in my current role and it informs my continued development in general systems theory, EMDR and psychodynamic therapy, especially relational psychoanalysis.

I consider how experiences of the past and sense making of ourselves in relationships, inform the interactions and patterns of our everyday engagement. These experiences remain in the 'here' and, together with my client, we explore the feedback loops informing unhelpful patterns. These feedback loops often see us experiencing for instance anxiety, depression but may also be traumatically held. The therapeutic relationship - considering the broader systemic context and that of my client, are at the centre of this process. In this, I have found resonance in the practice and values of my colleague and co-director at West Auckland Psychology, Rachel Hallas. This alignment supports the growth of our successful group practice.

I am registered within the clinical scope of psychology with the New Zealand Psychological Board and am a member of the Psychological Society of New Zealand, Member of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis, Member of the International Society of the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, Member of EMDRNZ (Accredited Practitioner and Consultant in Training).

I provide comprehensive assessment, diagnoses and mid to long term treatment to individuals, clinical supervision, as well as consultation to organisations in relation to workplace wellbeing.

Kate

Kate Naish

I am a Registered Clinical Psychologist. I grew up in Dunedin and graduated from Otago University in 2001. I got my first psychology job in Auckland, where I worked for the Department of Corrections for four years. London then beckoned, and I worked in a wide range of locum psychology positions all around that city for another four years.

I thereafter returned to Auckland to ‘settle down’ and now find myself with a husband and two young boys. Since returning to Auckland, I’ve worked in adult mental health services in Otahuhu, and now in part-time private practice out west.

My work is particularly influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This approach aims to help people live a rich and meaningful life, while effectively handling the pain and stress that (inevitably) goes with it.

Cobus du Plessis

Cobus du Plessis

My curiosity about our potential, and our ability for change, sparked my interest in taking up the calling of psychology. As a clinical psychologist, I have had the privilege of journeying alongside people from all walks of life, for more than 25 years. The work took me to thirteen countries, from Africa, to the UAE, and Asian-Pacific region, and these different cultures, ethnicities, worldviews, and experiences stretched me. Being able to meet others through our shared humanity, deepened my sense of care for the challenges we face. I am grateful for my experiences as a facilitator, lecturer, organisational development consultant, executive coach, forensic psychologist, and supervisor, as it helped me look for different ways of understanding our lived realities. These experiences shaped my personal values, which guided my work, and crystalised into my personal brand. Today I am intentional about growing this brand of being compassionate, creative, and connected.

Therapy can mean different things for different people, and no two peoples’ journeys are the same. I see it as both a science and an art, a type of specialised conversation that creates a safe space, where we can reveal ourselves, and understand the psychologically significant work that you would like to do. This may be done by helping us understand the relationship between our thinking, feelings, and behaviour. It may focus on how we get well, stay well, or grow well. We can explore the links between our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. It may help us to make peace with our past, make sense of our present, and define our desired future. Or sometimes it helps us to become more comfortable in our own skin, around other people, and accepting of those unchangeable things. The beautiful thing about therapy is that there is always more to us. In these sacred moments we get to see ourselves as uniquely created, we feel something stir inside of us, and it inspires our hope to become a better version of ourselves.

I am registered within the clinical scope of psychology with the New Zealand Psychologists Board, with a special interest in working with adults, couples, adolescents, trauma, substance use, and business coaching.

Heather Clare Alison

Dr Heather Clare Alison

He waka eke noa – “We are all in the same boat”.

I am passionate about mental health, especially that of children, adolescents, and their parents. This whakatauki (or te Reo proverb) speaks to me about a core value that holds true for me in my life, family, and calling to work in mental health. In a sense we are all in the same boat. It means that we are all affected by similar things, but it also speaks about the beauty of what we can achieve if we work together, towards a common goal.

Putting this value into practice has continually humbled me. I watched as people realized their capacity for personal growth, and in turn they helped me to grow with them. It gives me a great sense of purpose to work alongside parents and young people, to help them get unstuck, move forward, and hopefully flourish.

My career:

My passion for mental health was ignited when I was placed into adult psychiatry, during my community service year. From Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital, in South Africa, I worked in general adult psychiatry and trained at various other psychiatric hospitals and clinics. It was only when I took a break to be a full-time mom for a few years, that I realized that my true desire was to work with children and adolescents. This is where the most important aspects of my life merged with my career, and I returned to further my studies. After I qualified as a child and adolescent psychiatrist, I worked in specialist psychiatric hospitals. I provided both in-patient and out-patient care and worked with various interdisciplinary teams. Working as an integrated team, we were able to learn an incredible amount from each other.

In 2020 I immigrated to Aotearoa to continue my work at Starship hospital. Here I had the privilege of working alongside young people and their families, providing much needed acute interventions. They brought me the gift of their rich life experiences, and in return I was able to bring them the gift of my expertise. Together we worked to understand what brought us together at that point in time, we made sense of their past, we developed a holistic understanding (or diagnostic formulation) and implemented tailored management plans. It was very rewarding to see the positive impact of our collaboration and experience the meaningful change this brought to those families. Now I am venturing into private practice, where I plan to continue doing the good work, by adding value to the lives of young people, their parents, and their families.

Qualifications:

I am currently registered with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), and hold the following qualifications:

  • MBBCh (University of the Witwatersrand) - 1997
  • MMED (Psych) (University of Pretoria) - 2008
  • FC Psych (CMSA) - 2008
  • Certificate in child and adolescent psychiatry (CMSA) - (2010)

My preferred focus of care:

While I am qualified, experienced, and skilled at child, adolescent and general psychiatry, my preference is to work with ages 6 - 20 years, and parents of children. I provide holistic assessments and management plans, with my specific areas of interest being:

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
  • Mood disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related disorders
  • PTSD and other trauma/stressor related disorders

Daniela Affolter

Daniela Affolter

I was born and raised in Switzerland and have called Aotearoa New Zealand my home for over 27 years. My passion for psychotherapy developed, here in New Zealand, from my own experience of profoundly transformative therapy has been for me. I view psychotherapy as an investment in myself to continue to grow as a person (as this journey is never finished). I feel excited to have the opportunity to help others achieve positive life changes.

I provide relational and emotion-focused psychotherapy to individuals who would like support during difficult times to make sense of their emotions, experiences, and way of being in the world. I believe in the profound impact of reconnecting our emotions (feelings) to our bodies, as all too often in society, we spend too much time in our ‘heads’ without listening to what the body tells us.

I offer a safe space to build a trusting therapeutic relationship to explore what lies beneath the struggles that brought you to therapy. Such exploration helps grow our self-understanding and self-awareness, often leading to more authentic and fulfilling ways of being in the world. I work in a culturally respectful and sensitive manner and enjoy working with clients from all cultures and walks of life.

Areas of interest:

  • Emotion-Focused Therapy - Connecting mind/body experiences
  • Adult ADHD (lived experience)
  • Language in psychotherapy (speaking in native tongue vs. a second language)
  • Trauma - historic and recent
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Substance abuse
  • Grief & loss
  • Anxiety, depression, low-self-esteem
  • Obsessive Compulsive tendencies
  • Finding direction
  • Life transitions

Midi Willoughby

Midi Willoughby

Midi is a committed eating disorder coach who provides her clients with evidence-based strategies to manage disordered eating challenges. Her coaching methodology integrates a unique blend of her personal experiences with dietary restriction, the exclusion of certain food groups, and battling bulimia since early adolescence, coupled with the struggles she faced in securing specialised eating disorder treatment at an affordable cost. Lacking the necessary support, Midi felt obliged to keep her eating disorder a secret until she could access treatment after completing her Master's in Nutrition and commencing her first full-time role.

Having overcome bulimia several years ago, Midi is now eager to assist others facing similar difficulties. In January 2024, she launched her venture, Food Freedom Coach, offering affordable online coaching services to individuals throughout New Zealand. Her coaching is also informed by her education in Social Work and five years of professional experience in mental health, spanning both primary and secondary healthcare settings. Midi designs personalised recovery plans that cater to the unique requirements of each client, encompassing online coaching, support between sessions, telephone assistance, and group activities.
